120+ completed projects transforming inland fisheries across India
A selection of landmark projects spanning aquaculture, research, training, and environmental consulting
Designed and implemented a three-pond integrated aquaculture system for 50 farming families in the Sundarbans delta, combining carp polyculture with duck rearing and horticulture for maximum land utilisation.
Led a comprehensive taxonomic survey along a 200 km stretch of the Ganga river system, cataloguing species diversity, population density, and seasonal migration patterns of indigenous freshwater fish.
Designed, planned, and commissioned a state-of-the-art 5-lakh fingerling capacity hatchery featuring recirculating aquaculture systems, automated feeding, and water quality monitoring infrastructure.
Developed a comprehensive disease surveillance and management protocol for the Odisha Fisheries Department, covering 1,200 farms across six districts with standardised diagnostic and treatment guidelines.
Designed and delivered a 3-day intensive residential training programme on sustainable aquaculture technologies for progressive fish farmers, extension officers, and researchers from across India.
Conducted a detailed environmental impact assessment on fish migration and biodiversity for a proposed hydroelectric project, evaluating upstream-downstream ecological connectivity and population fragmentation risks.
Established a multi-generation selective breeding programme for Labeo rohita (Rohu) targeting improved growth rate, disease resistance, and feed conversion efficiency across three broodstock centres.
Facilitated the formation of a Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) for 200 fish farmers, streamlining collective procurement of inputs, joint marketing of produce, and access to institutional credit and government subsidies.
Investigated the ecological impact of introduced grass carp on native fish assemblages and aquatic macrophyte communities across 12 wetland systems in Assam, using mark-recapture and gut-content analysis methods.
Designed and deployed an IoT-based water quality monitoring network across 15 urban aquaculture ponds, tracking dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, and ammonia levels with SMS-based farmer alerts.
Facilitated a season-long farmer field school programme across 25 villages covering pond preparation, stocking density, supplementary feeding, disease prevention, and harvest and marketing techniques.
Co-authored the conservation action plan for 12 critically threatened freshwater fish species of India, defining habitat protection zones, captive breeding priorities, and community stewardship frameworks.
A milestone that reflects 15 years of dedicated service to India's fisheries sector
In 2023, Dr. Chayan Roy crossed the landmark of 100 completed consulting and research projects — a testament to 15 years of unwavering dedication to inland fisheries science. These projects have collectively reached over 5,000 fish farmers, contributed to the conservation of 200+ species, and generated measurable economic uplift for communities from the Sundarbans to the Brahmaputra. Each project is built on a foundation of rigorous science, community partnership, and a genuine commitment to sustainable livelihoods.
